Windelov Fern (Microsorum pteropus ‘Windelov’) is an attractive cultivated variety of Java Fern known for its distinctive finely branched and forked leaf tips. Its decorative green foliage creates a unique textured appearance, making it an excellent plant for planted aquariums and natural-style aquascapes.
Like other Java Fern varieties, Windelov Fern is hardy, slow-growing, and easy to maintain. It performs well under low to medium lighting and does not require CO₂ injection, making it suitable for beginners and low-tech planted aquariums.
Windelov Fern is best attached to driftwood, rocks, or other aquarium hardscape. It can be secured using plant thread or aquarium-safe adhesive until the roots naturally attach themselves to the surface.
Do not bury the rhizome completely in the substrate. The rhizome should remain exposed to the water, as burying it can cause the rhizome to deteriorate or rot.
Windelov Fern requires minimal maintenance because of its relatively slow growth. Remove damaged or deteriorating leaves when necessary and keep the foliage reasonably clean to reduce excessive algae buildup. New plants can develop through rhizome growth or from small plantlets that form on mature leaves.
Windelov Fern (Microsorum pteropus ‘Windelov’) is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a hardy and distinctive aquarium plant. Its beautifully branched leaf tips provide additional texture and detail to aquascapes while its undemanding care requirements make it suitable for a wide variety of freshwater aquarium setups.
