Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the most popular and easy-to-care-for live aquarium plants. Known for its attractive green leaves, hardy nature, and low maintenance requirements, Java Fern is an excellent choice for beginners as well as experienced aquascapers.
This slow-growing plant performs well under low to medium lighting and does not require CO₂ injection. Java Fern is best attached to rocks, driftwood, and other aquarium hardscape rather than planted deeply into the substrate.
Attach Java Fern to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decorations using plant thread or aquarium-safe adhesive. Over time, the roots will naturally attach themselves to the hardscape.
Do not bury the rhizome completely in the substrate. The rhizome should remain exposed to the water. Burying it can cause the rhizome to deteriorate or rot.
Java Fern requires relatively little maintenance. Remove damaged or older leaves when necessary and keep the leaves reasonably clean to reduce algae buildup. New plants may develop from the rhizome or as small plantlets on mature leaves.
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a hardy, attractive, and low-maintenance aquarium plant. Its ability to grow without demanding lighting or CO₂ makes it a versatile addition to a wide variety of freshwater aquarium setups.
