The Checker Barb (Oliotius oligolepis), also known as the Checkered Barb, is a beautiful freshwater aquarium fish recognized for its distinctive checkerboard-like scale pattern, shimmering silver-brown body, and attractive reddish fins. Mature males often develop more intense coloration, making them particularly eye-catching in planted aquariums.
Peaceful, active, and easy to care for, the Checker Barb is an excellent choice for community aquariums. Its compact size, attractive markings, and lively group behavior make it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. When kept in a proper group, these fish display natural social interactions and beautiful coloration.
A well-planted aquarium with driftwood, natural rocks, and open swimming areas provides an ideal environment for Checker Barbs. Darker substrates and suitable aquarium lighting can enhance their natural coloration. Good filtration, stable water parameters, and regular water changes are recommended for long-term health.
Diet: Omnivorous. Checker Barbs readily accept high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and vegetable-based foods. A varied diet helps support healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and overall condition.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and social. Checker Barbs should ideally be kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals. Larger groups encourage natural behavior, reduce shyness, and allow males to display their attractive coloration. They are generally suitable for peaceful community aquariums with similarly sized fish.

Approximately 3–4cm (1.2–1.6 inches), measured from mouth to tail. Actual size may vary slightly between individual fish.
Yes – Social Group Fish. Checker Barbs are best maintained in groups of at least 6–8 individuals. Although they may not swim in tightly coordinated schools at all times, keeping them in groups encourages natural social behavior and greater confidence.
With Caution. Checker Barbs may coexist with larger adult shrimp, but newly hatched shrimplets and very small shrimp may be eaten. Dense aquatic plants and moss can provide additional hiding places.
The Checker Barb (Oliotius oligolepis) is an excellent addition to peaceful freshwater community aquariums. With its unique checkerboard pattern, attractive reddish fins, and active social behavior, this charming barb brings natural beauty and movement to planted aquarium setups.
